Today's Hint: Run the Four-Word Scout
Eight boards are starving for information, so your first four guesses must be pure reconnaissance — not answers. Play STARE → COLIN → PUDGY → BUMPH (or the trio CRANE → SLOTH → DUMPS if you prefer three openers). These expose 15–20 unique letters with zero repeats, covering all five vowels and the heaviest consonants (S, T, R, L, N, C, P, M). By guess 5, three or four boards will be nearly solved. Skipping the scout to chase an early solve is the number-one way Octordle runs die.
Starter-Word Coverage Tool
Pick a scout set below. The tool scores how many unique letters — and how many of the top-12 most frequent letters in 5-letter words — each set covers:
Per-Board Triage: Solve in the Right Order
After the scout, rank your eight boards by information — count greens plus yellows on each. Then:
- Guesses 5–6 — clear the two easiest boards. Locking easy boards early frees your attention; unlike Quordle's "park" strategy, Octordle rewards closing solved-feeling boards fast because eight boards overload working memory.
- Guesses 7–9 — work the middle four. Spend one guess per board, feeding each board's confirmed letters. Never spend two consecutive guesses on the same board unless it is one letter away.
- Guesses 10–13 — sweep the stubborn remainder. The last two or three boards get burner words first (see below), then committed answers only when you are down to one or two candidates.
Burner Words: Your Endgame Weapon
With eight boards, consonant traps multiply. If two boards both end in -OUND (BOUND, FOUND, HOUND, POUND, ROUND, SOUND), do not guess them one by one — that burns six guesses. Instead play one burner like PHBRS-style coverage: a valid word such as PROBS or CHIRP that tests P, H, R, B, F, S across candidates in a single guess. One well-chosen burner testing five consonants beats five desperate board-specific guesses every time.
Screen Discipline: Check All 8, Every Turn
You cannot see all eight boards at once — you must scroll. Check boards in a fixed order every turn (top-left → bottom-right) so no quadrant is ever forgotten. After every guess, ask two questions: which board gained the most color? (feed it next) and which board is still a gray desert? (ignore it until the endgame). Gray deserts need burner letters, not answers.
Common Octordle Mistakes
- Solving before scouting. Locking a board on guess 3 feels good and loses games — those scout letters serve seven other boards.
- Skipping boards. With eight boards to scroll, players forget entire quadrants. Fixed-order checks fix this.
- Gambling 50/50s mid-game. Save coin-flip confirmations for guesses 11–13. Mid-game guesses must test new letters, not gamble.
- Playing clever openers. Any committed answer before guess 5 is a wasted scout with eight boards hungry for information.
Climb the Ladder Before 8 Boards
Never jump straight to Octordle. Build up through Wordle (1 board) → Dordle (2 boards) → Quordle (4 boards) → Octordle. Each step teaches the next level's core skill: single-board solving, dual tracking, information budgeting, then pure triage.
