Experience the Strands Game

The Strands Game is an intricate word-search puzzle where words can snake and bend in any direction. Unlike traditional word searches, every single letter on the board must be used to form the hidden theme words, leaving no unused characters by the end of the game.

How to Play

Look at the daily theme clue at the top of the screen to guide your search. Click and drag your mouse (or swipe your finger on mobile) across adjacent letters to highlight a word. If you find a correct theme word, it will lock into place and change color. Your ultimate goal is to find the "Spangram"—a special theme word that stretches from one edge of the board to the opposite edge.

How Our Engine Works

This page uses an archive of authentic, historically accurate grids and target words. When a board is loaded, our custom JavaScript pathfinding logic strictly validates your mouse-drags against the specific puzzle's intended word set, ensuring accurate edge-detection for the Spangram win condition.

Strategies for Strands

  • Corner Isolation: Because every letter must be used, pay close attention to corner letters. They have fewer neighbors, meaning it is usually obvious which word must consume them.
  • Look for the Spangram Early: The Spangram touches two opposite sides of the board. Finding it first neatly cuts the board in half, making the remaining theme words much easier to spot.
  • Experiment with Prefixes: If you spot "UN" or "RE", trace outwards to see if they attach to longer root words related to the daily clue.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I find a word that isn't a theme word?

In the official rules, finding non-theme dictionary words builds up your hint meter — ours does too: every 3 valid extra words earns 1 hint. The find is acknowledged with a message, but only theme words lock into the grid.

How to Play Word Path — Complete Guide

Strands is the New York Times' brilliant twist on the classic word search — a daily topological puzzle where words bend and snake in every direction, and every single letter on the board must be used exactly once. Our free online Strands game lets you play unlimited puzzles with authentic themed grids and Spangrams — no subscription, no daily limit, no paywall.

Strands Rules — How the Game Works

  1. Trace words: Click and drag (or swipe on mobile) across adjacent letters — horizontally, vertically, or diagonally — changing direction at every letter if needed.
  2. Find the theme: All theme words share a hidden category revealed by the daily clue (e.g., "Breakfast foods" → EGGS, BACON, TOAST).
  3. Locate the Spangram: The master theme word physically spans from one edge of the board to the opposite edge. It names or describes the theme itself. See our What is a Spangram? guide.
  4. No leftovers: Every letter on the 8×6 grid belongs to exactly one theme word or the Spangram. When the board is empty, you win.
  5. No overlaps: Once a letter is claimed by a found word, it locks and cannot be reused.
  6. Non-theme words: Valid dictionary words that aren't of the theme earn hint credit instead of locking tiles — every 3 extra words earns 1 hint (tap 💡 Hint to reveal one letter).

How to Find the Spangram

The Spangram is the skeleton key of every puzzle. Because it must touch two opposite edges, start by scanning the top row, bottom row, left column, and right column for a long chain that could stretch across. Spangrams are usually 8–12 letters and often read like a category title ("SOFTBALL," "LINEDANCE," "CONDENSATION"). Finding it first splits the board into manageable halves and reveals the theme — the remaining words then fall quickly.

How to Win Strands — 6 Pro Strategies

  1. Read the clue before the board. The theme clue tells you the semantic neighborhood. If the clue is "Wet blankets," think weather words (DRIZZLE, HUMIDITY, MIST) before tracing a single letter.
  2. Hunt prefixes and suffixes. Letter clusters like -ING, -TION, -EST, PRE-, and UN- isolate board chunks fast because they chain predictably in any direction.
  3. Build around rare letters. Q, X, Z, and J are extremely restrictive — they almost always belong to the Spangram or an obvious theme word. Start your trace there.
  4. Attack corners first. Corner cells have only 3 neighbors (vs 8 in the interior), so the words consuming them are highly constrained. Clearing corners early prevents endgame deadlocks.
  5. Use undo freely. Tap any found word to undo it and free its letters. Wrong locks are cheap to reverse — experiment aggressively.
  6. Spell backwards. If forward tracing stalls, try reading candidate words in reverse. Serpentine paths often hide when your eyes expect left-to-right flow.
