What Is a Word Search Solver?
A word search solver takes a letter grid and a list of hidden words, then pinpoints exactly where each word sits: its starting row and column plus the direction it runs. A proper solver checks all 8 directions — left-to-right, right-to-left, top-to-bottom, bottom-to-top, and the four diagonals — because real puzzles hide words backwards and diagonally on purpose. This solver highlights each found word in its own color and lists any missing words separately, so you always know what is solved and what still needs a human eye.
It runs entirely in your browser with no word list to download and no server involved: paste, solve, done. The demo grid above is fully playable — load it, solve it, then edit the letters and words to make it your own puzzle.
How to Solve a Word Search in 3 Steps
- Paste the grid. Copy the puzzle rows into the left box, one row per line, letters only. Spaces, dots, and dividers are stripped automatically — but every row must end up the same length. Solving a printed puzzle? Type the rows exactly as printed.
- Add the word list. Enter the hidden words in the right box, one per line (commas work too). Up to 100 words, each at least 2 letters.
- Click Solve Word Search. Found words light up in the grid, each with a color chip showing its position (row × column) and direction name. Words that are not in the grid are struck through as Not found.
The 8 Directions, Explained
Every word in a word search runs in a straight line along one of 8 compass directions. The solver checks them all, and the legend names the direction for each find:
- → Right and ← Left — horizontal, forwards and backwards. The easiest finds; scan these first by hand.
- ↓ Down and ↑ Up — vertical. Bottom-to-top words are the classic "invisible" hiders.
- ↘ ↙ ↗ ↖ Diagonals — the four diagonal slopes, each in both orientations. Diagonals hide best because the eye tracks rows and columns, not slopes.
Try the demo: it contains a horizontal word (SEARCH), a vertical word (PUZZLE), a diagonal word (WORDS), a bottom-row word (LETTERS), and more — one for nearly every direction, so you can see the highlighting and legend in action.
Word Search Strategy: Get Faster by Hand
- Start with rare letters. Words containing J, Q, X, Z, or K pop out of the grid instantly — find their odd letters first, then check which direction the word runs.
- Scan for the first letter, not the word. Sweep the grid for every instance of the word's starting letter, then test the 8 directions from each hit. This beats reading rows aimlessly.
- Clear horizontals first. Left-to-right words are the fastest finds. Cross them off, and the remaining letters form a smaller, easier search space.
- Flip the puzzle for backwards words. Physically rotating the page (or your head) turns right-to-left words into easy left-to-right reads.
- Use crossing letters. Found words share letters with unfound ones. The bright highlighted cells become landmarks — check what crosses through them.
- Save diagonals for last. They are the hardest to spot and the easiest to verify once everything else is crossed off and few letters remain.

Word Search Solver FAQ
What is a word search solver?
A tool that scans a letter grid for hidden words and shows each word's exact position and direction, checking all 8 directions including backwards and diagonal.
How do I use it?
Paste the grid (one row per line) and the word list (one word per line), then click Solve. Found words highlight in color; missing words are listed as Not found.
Does it find backwards and diagonal words?
Yes — all 8 directions: horizontal, vertical, and diagonal, forwards and backwards.
Is it free?
Yes — free, unlimited, no login, runs entirely in your browser.
Why is my word "Not found"?
Usually a copying typo or a short row. Check every grid row has the same letter count and the word is spelled exactly as listed.
Can I solve a printed puzzle?
