7 Letter Words โ€” 32,909 in the Full List

Every seven-letter word in this site's dictionary, with a live filter, runtime letter counts, Scrabble scores and a copy button. Built for the seven-letter hive puzzle, Scrabble bingos and word-search construction.

There are 32,909 seven-letter words in this site's dictionary, and between them they hold 230,363 letters. Seven is the longest length the site indexes, and it is the length that the popular word games actually ask for: the seven-letter hive puzzle, a seven-tile Scrabble rack, and word searches that need a word long enough to be hard to hide by accident. The filter below reads the same file the rest of the site's tools read, so every count on this page is computed live rather than typed into a table.

Type the letters a word has to contain, type the letters it must not contain, narrow by first letter, and set a minimum Scrabble score if you are hunting a high-value play. The counters, the letter chips and the word list all recompute from the loaded dictionary, so what you read is what the list contains.

Each chip shows how many words start with that letter under your current filters. Click one to keep only those words, and click it again to clear it.

The list is trimmed for speed. A window of rows is held in the page at a time, so older rows drop off the top as you load more; the count above always describes the complete filtered set, not the visible window. Copy all matches copies every word that matches your filters, not just the ones on screen, and Copy visible copies only the rows you can currently see. Type a letter twice in the include box to require two copies of it.

Why seven letters is the pivot length

Three different games want a seven-letter list, and each one wants something slightly different from it. The seven-letter hive puzzle is the obvious case. Every answer in that game is built from the day's seven letters, one of which sits in the centre of the hive and is compulsory. A word counts only if it is at least four letters long, uses nothing but the hive's letters, and contains the centre letter at least once. Seven-letter answers are the largest the game allows, and they are the ones worth the most, because a seven-letter answer that also uses all seven letters is a pangram and collects a bonus on top of its letter values.

The centre letter is the filter that does most of the work. Take a hive of A, C, E, I, N, R, T with R in the middle. Almost every word in this list dies on the first test, because the great majority of seven-letter English words either need a letter that is not on the board or do not contain the centre at all. That is why a 32,909-word dictionary is useful here rather than overwhelming: the hive cuts it down hard before you start reading.

The second tool the hive puzzle gives you is the two-letter breakdown. The game will show you every pair of letters that can begin a long answer, and that list is a map of the openings available to you. What it is not is a list of two-letter answers, because the game has a four-letter minimum. Every word you build from those openings still has to carry the centre letter. If you want the structure rather than the answers, the site's Spelling Bee word list guide sets out the rules in full, and the pangram guide covers the seven-letter hunt specifically.

Scrabble wants seven letters for a different reason. The rack holds seven tiles, so a seven-letter word is the only thing on the board that uses the whole rack at once. That is the bingo, and it is worth a great deal more than the sum of its letter values. This list contains 32,909 candidate bingos, and the Scrabble solver is where you should take the candidates to check them against a board.

Strands-style themed grids want seven letters too, because the theme word has to be long enough to be unmistakable and to pull the other answers out of the grid around it. Word searches want seven letters for the opposite reason: a seven-letter word is unlikely to appear in the grid by accident, so hiding one does not create an unwanted answer. A Boggle-style dice grid wants long words because a long word is a bigger scoring opportunity than a short one, and because a seven-letter path needs a large board.

What all four have in common is that seven letters is where the games stop being about single words and start being about word families. Which brings up the number that explains this list better than any other: seven-letter words are not two extra letters bolted onto five-letter ones. Between them they contain 230,363 letters, and a large part of that bulk is English morphology doing what morphology does when a word gets longer.

The dictionary grows faster than the language does

    Here is the shape of the site's word lists by length. Two-letter words: 124. Three-letter: 1,292. Four-letter: 5,454. Five-letter: 12,478. Six-letter: 22,157. Seven-letter: 32,909.

Look at the steps. From three to four letters the list grows by a factor of four. From four to five it grows by a factor of two and a half. From five to six, by 1.8. From six to seven, by 1.5. The growth is slowing, which is what you expect from a real vocabulary, but the absolute numbers still climb steeply: there are 2.6 times as many seven-letter words as five-letter ones, from a base that is only two letters longer.

The reason is suffixes. A five-letter word is mostly a root: PLANT, FRAME, CLEAR, BRING. A seven-letter word is a root with something attached. Walk the alphabet and you can watch it happen. BACKED is seven letters and BACK is four. BLANKET is seven and BLANK is five. CARPETS is seven and CARPET is six. TEACHING is seven and TEACH is five. The dictionary is not really growing in vocabulary at seven letters; it is growing in the number of ways English can decorate the vocabulary it already has.

This has a direct consequence for how you use the list, and it is the single most important thing to understand before you go hunting in it. A seven-letter dictionary is mostly a list of inflections. Cross-check the list against the shorter lists the site already ships and the number is stark: 13,976 of the 32,909 seven-letter words, 42.47% of the list, are a shorter word from this site's own dictionary plus a standard ending.

The counts overlap in places, which is why the union of the families is smaller than the sum of the rows. But the pattern is plain: more than four words in ten in this list are a shorter word with an ending attached, and another third end in a plain S that may or may not have a shorter stem in the dictionary.

The letter economy at seven letters

With 230,363 letters spread across 32,909 words, this list is large enough that individual letter shares are stable, and they are worth knowing by heart if you play with letters for a living. E is the commonest letter at 27,218 occurrences, 11.82% of everything. S follows at 21,721. A is third, I fourth, R fifth. At the bottom, Q appears 398 times, J 644 and X 668.

Those two percentages are worth holding side by side. E is 11.82% of all the letters in seven-letter words. In five-letter words it is 10.32%, in four-letter words 9.53%, in three-letter words 9.16%, and in six-letter words 12.27%. The share climbs steadily from three letters to six, then eases back slightly at seven. The practical reading is simple: the longer the word, the more likely a vowel is to be doing quiet work in the middle of it, and the less information you get from finding one.

Notice how far Q sits from everything else. At 0.17% of all letters, a Q is roughly seventy times rarer than an E. In the Scrabble scoring system it is also the most valuable letter in the bag at ten points, which is a nice coincidence but not an accident: scarcity and value travel together, because a rare letter is the thing a game is built to make scarce.

Two of the rarest letters have a rule attached that you can lean on. 382 of the 398 words that contain a Q spell it as the digraph QU. Only 14 words contain a Q and no U at all, and every one of them is a proper noun, a transliteration or an abbreviation: QABALAH, QABALAS, QASIDAS, QAWWALI, QAWWALS, QIGONGS, QINDARS, QINTARS, QWERTYS, SHEQELS, TSADDIQ, TZADDIQ, YAQONAS and INQILAB. If you are hunting for a playable word and you find a seven-letter word with a Q in it and no U beside it, you have found a name, not an answer.

There is a comparable trap at the other end of the alphabet. 665 seven-letter words contain an X, and 26 of them start with one. Those 26 are almost entirely Greek and Latin scientific vocabulary: XANTHIC, XENOPUS, XERARCH, XEROSIS, XIPHOID, XYLENOL, XYLIDIN, ZYDECOS. A puzzle editor would never pick them. Only three words in the whole list contain two Xs at all: XEROXED, XEROXES and MAXIXES.

Where the words start, and where they end

The first-letter distribution is the place where the plural bias of English shows up most clearly, because a plural is just a word with a letter removed and an S added, and that pushes the whole distribution towards S.

S starts 3,843 of the 32,909 words, 11.68% of the list. C follows with 2,771, then P with 2,524 and B with 2,290. The tail is small and very unlike the head: Z starts 199 words, Q starts 174, Y starts 167, and X starts just 26. If you want a seven-letter word that a player would not guess, an X or a Z at the front is a very cheap way to get it.

Now the last letters, where the effect is far stronger. S ends 11,036 words, 33.53% of the entire list. More than one word in three. E ends 3,501 and D ends 3,497, so those two are a distant second and third, and then R at 2,764 and G at 2,263. Y ends 1,752 words, which makes it a genuine top-ten ending rather than a rarity. At the bottom of the table, only two seven-letter words end in a Q, exactly one ends in a V โ€” ISOGRIV โ€” and not one ends in a J.

That single figure, one word in three ending in S, is worth more than any other statistic on this page for understanding what you are looking at. If you sit down with a seven-letter list and try to find the words a player would know, the plural endings are going to fill your screen before anything else does. Read past them. The interesting seven-letter words are the ones with a consonant ending and a suffix you have to work for.

One more positional fact, because it is a useful filter: 2,176 words, 6.61% of the list, start and end with the same letter. ACCIDIA, ACEROLA, ACICULA and many others work this way. Seven letters give you room to build a word around its own edges, and roughly one word in fifteen does it.

The vowel share, and the four words with no vowel at all

Here is the clearest difference between a three-letter list and a seven-letter one. At three letters, 41 of the 1,292 words have no vowel at all, 3.17% of the set, and that is a meaningful proportion. At seven letters, only four do: GLYCYLS, NYMPHLY, RHYTHMS and TSKTSKS. Three of them use Y as a vowel. TSKTSKS has no vowel of any kind and is the only word in the list built entirely from consonants, which makes it the sort of entry that shows up in a dictionary and never in a puzzle.

That collapse happens for a structural reason. The longer the word, the more likely it is to contain at least one vowel, because a vowel is what lets a syllable exist and a long word needs syllables. At seven letters, the count of vowelless words is four, and you can read all four on one line.

How many vowels each seven-letter word contains. Vowels counted are A, E, I, O and U; Y is counted separately.

610.00%Only one word has six vowels: EUOUAES

Two and three vowels account for 29,590 words, 89.91% of the list, and that is the band where the interesting English sits. A seven-letter word with two vowels and five consonants is a thing like MONSTER or BLANKET. One with three vowels and four consonants is a thing like KEYNOTE or TEACHER. That ratio matters for the hive puzzle as well, because a hive usually carries two or three vowels among its seven letters, and a candidate word that needs four vowels is a candidate word that a given hive probably cannot build.

Five vowels is worth a second look, because it is a different kind of constraint altogether. Only 59 words in the whole list contain all five of A, E, I, O and U. The five that also use seven different letters are DOULEIA, EULOGIA, MIAOUED, MOINEAU and SEQUOIA. Five is a small, memorable number, and a hive built around one of these words would be a strange hive.

And 1,752 words end in a Y, which is 5.32% of the list. English uses Y as a vowel in adjectives ending in -LY and in a handful of nouns, and at seven letters the -LY family alone accounts for 294 words. If you are checking whether a hive can build a word, the Y-ending band is worth filtering separately rather than reading through.

    The shapes that dominate

Shape means the pattern of vowels and consonants, written with C for a consonant and V for a vowel. It is the fastest way to see the skeleton of a word, and at seven letters the skeletons are sharply concentrated. Eight patterns cover more than three words in five.

The leader, CVCCVCC, is the shape of a very ordinary English word. A consonant, a vowel, two consonants, a vowel, two consonants โ€” LANTERN, NETWORK, PUDDING, SANDALS, BACKING, BADGERS. One word in five has this skeleton, and the reason is easy to see once you start counting syllables: a two-syllable word with the stress on the first syllable becomes C-V-CC-V-CC once you allow the second syllable's consonant cluster to run into the next. It is the shape English returns to when nothing unusual is happening.

The strict alternation CVCVCVC is second at 2,962 words, and it is a useful one to recognise because it is the shape of the longest words you can build without doubling a letter. CABINET, BALONEY, BANANAS. A puzzle editor looking for a word that feels long without feeling padded reaches for this pattern.

CVCCVVC, at 2,206, is the shape of the words that end in a double vowel pair: CAPTAIN, PENGUIN, BAGGIES, BALLOON is six letters but the family is there. And VCCVCVC, at 1,112, is the shape of words that open on a vowel, which is where a large share of the Latin and Greek vocabulary in the dictionary sits: ABDUCED, ABLATOR, ABRADED, ACADEMIA. That last point is the practical warning about this list: the shapes that look odd are usually the shapes that belong to the scientific half of the dictionary.

Two thirds of them repeat a letter

22,110 of the 32,909 words, 67.19%, contain at least one letter that appears more than once. That is a far higher share than at five letters, where 4,465 of 12,478 words repeat a letter, and it is a direct consequence of length. The more slots a word has, the more likely it is that one of them is a repeat.

Break the 22,110 down by how they repeat and the picture is tidy. Exactly one pair: 15,106 words, 68.32% of the repeaters. Two separate pairs: 4,726, 21.37%. A letter three or more times: 1,980, 8.96%. And 298 words have three pairs, which is a shape that only exists at this length because it needs six slots plus one left over. ACCEDED, ACETATE, APPALLS, APPEASE, ANNATTO, ARRASES are all seven letters carrying three doubled letters and a single spare.

Twelve thousand four hundred and twenty-nine of these words repeat a vowel and 9,681 repeat a consonant but no vowel. The vowel-repeaters are the more useful group, because a doubled vowel is usually visible in the shape: CAPTAIN and PENGUIN end in -AIN and -ING, BLANKET and JACKETS carry the double in the middle.

One more positional detail. Of the 22,110 words with a repeat, only 4,204, 19.01%, keep every repeated letter sitting next to itself. The other 17,906, 80.99%, scatter at least one repeat across the word. A repeated letter at seven letters is usually not adjacent. That is worth remembering if you are building a word-search grid and want to know whether a double letter will sit next to itself in the path you draw.

Telling a playable word from an obscure one

This is the question the list exists to answer, and the honest answer is that no single signal decides it. But four of them together will save you most of the reading.

The inflection test. If the word is a shorter word plus a standard ending, it is a real word but it is not a puzzle answer. More than four words in ten in this list fail this test. The tool makes it mechanical: type the ending into the exclude box, or sort by score and read around the inflections. A word that survives a check for -S, -ED, -ING, -ER, -ES, -LY and -EST is in the more interesting half of the list.

The rare-letter test. Q, X, Z and J appear in 2,599 words between them, 7.90% of the list. Words with those letters are exotic and usually rejected by a puzzle editor, but they are also the ones that make a grid or a hive interesting, so they are worth keeping rather than discarding.

The proper-noun test. The list excludes most proper nouns, which is a genuine advantage over a general dictionary, but a handful slip through in transliterated or Latinised form: QABALAH and QIGONGS among them. Words that are obviously names are the ones to skip.

The distinct-letter test. 10,799 words, 32.81% of the list, use seven different letters. That group has a special value in the hive puzzle, because such a word has the maximum chance of covering the whole hive: if the letters of a hive happen to match a word's seven distinct letters, that word hits every letter at once. A word like KEYNOTE, DIAMOND or CAPTAIN is built to use a whole alphabet.

Set against those four signals, here is a scale for how selective a real daily puzzle is. The curated answer list this site's own Spelling Bee game ships holds 1,128 words of four letters or more, and only ten of them are seven letters long: CAPTAIN, LEARNED, PAINTER, PLANETS, PLASTER, POINTED, PRINTED, READING, STAPLER and TRAINED. Ten. Against a pool of 32,909, that is a selection rate of 0.03%. A real puzzle answer set is not a filtered dictionary. It is a tiny, hand-checked corner of one.

So the practical guidance is this. Use the list as a candidate pool, not an answer key. Filter it, read it, and expect that most of what passes the mechanical filters will still be rejected by a game that has curated its own vocabulary. The site's Spelling Bee answers page exists for the moment when you want to check your work after the puzzle rather than search for it.

A worked filter for a hive. Say the hive is A, C, E, I, N, R, T with R in the centre. Type ac into the include box and qzxj into the exclude box, then click the R chip to hold the first letter to R. Every remaining word has to be built from the hive, carry the centre letter, and avoid the letters a puzzle will never have. That takes 32,909 words down to a list short enough to read in a minute, and it is the same reduction the game's own tooling makes.

Scrabble value: the average, the high scorers and the expensive letters

    The average Scrabble score across the 32,909 words is 11.82 points. The average seven-letter word is worth nearly twelve points before a single bonus square is placed, which is a consequence of length rather than of value. Scrabble letter values are A1 B3 C3 D2 E1 F4 G2 H4 I1 J8 K5 L1 M3 N1 O1 P3 Q10 R1 S1 T1 U1 V4 W4 X8 Y4 Z10.

Two averages inside that one are more informative than the headline figure. Words built from seven different letters average 12.35 points, and words with a repeated letter average 11.56. The distinct-letter words are worth more, because the common letters in this list are mostly worth one point and the only way to raise the average is to spend a Q, an X, a Z or a J.

That is visible in the per-letter averages. Words containing a Z average 20.65 points. Words containing a Q average 18.49, words containing a J average 17.59, and words containing an X average 17.10. Every one of those is far above the 11.82 baseline, and it is the same mechanism each time: one expensive letter drags the whole word up.

Thirty-nine words in the list score 30 or more, and every one of them is built on a Z or a Q. 802 words score 20 or more. At the other end, 3,591 words score 8 or less, and those are the ones worth avoiding when you are constructing a puzzle, because they are the words that appear by accident. The cheapest seven-letter word in the list scores 7 and the most expensive scores 45, a spread of more than six to one driven entirely by which tiles you spend.

For actual board play, a seven-letter word is a bingo and you should check it against the board rather than assume it. The Scrabble solver does the board maths, and the word finder will find the same words by a different route if you would rather search from a rack.

    Putting the list to work

Building a hive puzzle. The hive constrains a word on two axes at once: which letters are available and which one is in the centre. The tool's include box handles the first, and the centre letter is just one more letter to require. Add the hive letters, add the centre letter, and you have mechanically enumerated everything the puzzle could accept, before any judgement about whether the word is interesting. From there, look for the pangram: a seven-letter word that uses all seven hive letters is the big score, and if the hive contains a Q, an X or a Z, the pangram is usually the only word that uses that letter at all.

There is a number worth holding on to when you are doing this. The 10,799 seven-letter words that use seven different letters are built from 8,174 distinct letter combinations, and 6,429 of those combinations belong to exactly one word. The most crowded combination is AEINRST, which carries 11 words, followed by AEGINST with 11 and AEGINRS with 10. A hive is really a question about which of those 8,174 combinations you have been handed, and a hive built on a common set gives you a lot more room to move.

Working the two-letter sweep. The hive puzzle's most reliable habit is to take the two-letter breakdown and run it to the end: for each pair, find the longest word starting that way. A seven-letter list is the right instrument for this because it is long enough to hide a pangram inside a common opening. Sort Z to A and start at the end of the alphabet, where the openings are rarest, and the long words tend to surface first.

Laying out a word search. A seven-letter word is a good hiding place because it is unlikely to occur by chance, but only if you pick it well. The 3,591 words worth 8 points or less are the ones that will turn up in the letters around them. Words with a Q, an X, a Z or a J are safer, because those letters are scarce enough that a stray appearance is meaningful. And because 80.99% of repeated letters at this length are not adjacent, a word with a double letter will not necessarily draw a doubled path on your grid, which matters if you are drawing the path by hand. When you are building the grid itself, the word search maker lays out the letters and the answer key for you.

Grids and dice. In a Boggle-style grid, a seven-letter word needs a straight path of seven cells, so it needs a board of at least five by five to be findable at all. In a Strands-style themed grid the theme word has to be findable in one pass, so pick a seven-letter word whose letters are scattered across the theme answer's own neighbourhood rather than one that runs in a straight line. In both cases, the first filter to apply is the rare-letter one, because a theme word that shares letters with every other answer on the board is a theme word nobody can spot. The Boggle solver is the place to test a candidate path, and the themed grid game is where the theme word has to survive being found by someone who did not plan it.

Narrowing a puzzle. When you already know some letters, this list is a cross-reference rather than a starting point. Filter by the letters you need, exclude the letters you have ruled out, set a minimum score if the game cares about value, and you are left with a short list of candidates to test. For five-letter work, the complete five-letter list and the five-letter word generator cover the daily five-letter game, and the Wordle solver applies the game's own feedback rules to your actual board.

Related lists worth keeping open alongside this one: the five-letter words with double letters, which shows how the repeat rate falls as words get longer, and the five-letter words without vowels, where the vowelless band is still large enough to be useful. At seven letters the same filter returns four words, which is the whole point of this page.

    The limits of this list

    Two limits, stated plainly.

First, this is a full English dictionary filtered by length, not an answer list. It contains 32,909 valid seven-letter words, and 13,976 of them are inflections of shorter words. It contains Latin and Greek borrowings in quantity (ABDUCED, XEROSIS, ZYDECOS) and a small number of transliterated proper nouns (QABALAH, QAWWALI). It excludes most everyday proper nouns, so you will not find TUESDAY, AFRICAN, GERMANY or SCOTTISH here. All of those are appropriate for a dictionary and inappropriate for a puzzle, and the only way to bridge that gap is judgement.

Second, the Scrabble scores quoted on this page use standard English letter values. Which words are legal plays also depends on the tournament dictionary in use, so treat the score column as a ranking of value rather than a guarantee that a word may be played on any given board.

And the third limit is the one that matters most for a hive puzzle: a word being in this dictionary says nothing about whether the game will accept it. The game's own lexicon is curated, and it changes. Use this list to generate candidates, and use the game's feedback to decide.

Every figure on this page was computed from the same 32,909-word list that the tool loads: the 230,363 letter count, the letter shares, the first-letter and last-letter distributions, the vowel bands, the shape breakdown, the repeat counts and the Scrabble scores. The tool recalculates the first-letter chip counts and the filtered totals live, so if the list is ever updated the page follows it rather than going stale.

    7 Letter Words โ€” FAQ

How many 7-letter words are there?

32,909. That is the full seven-letter set in this site's dictionary, and between them the words hold 230,363 letters. It is the longest list the site indexes: for comparison, there are 22,157 six-letter words, 12,478 five-letter words, 5,454 four-letter words, 1,292 three-letter words and 124 two-letter words. The tool at the top of this page loads all 32,909 and filters them live.

What is the most common letter in 7-letter words?

E, with 27,218 occurrences, which is 11.82% of all 230,363 letters. S is second at 21,721 and A third at 18,464. At the other end, Q appears 398 times (0.17%), J 644 times and X 668 times. The E share rises as words get longer: it is 9.16% of three-letter words, 9.53% of four-letter words, 10.32% of five-letter words, 12.27% of six-letter words and 11.82% of seven-letter words.

How many 7-letter words have no vowel?

Only four: GLYCYLS, NYMPHLY, RHYTHMS and TSKTSKS. Three of them use Y as a vowel, and TSKTSKS has no vowel at all. Compare that with three-letter words, where 41 of the 1,292 have no vowel, and you can see how quickly the vowelless band disappears as words get longer. The vowel breakdown overall is 686 words with one vowel, 14,266 with two, 15,324 with three, 2,569 with four, 59 with five and one with six.

How many 7-letter words repeat a letter?

22,110 of the 32,909, or 67.19%. Of those, 15,106 have exactly one repeated pair, 4,726 have two separate pairs, 298 have three pairs and 1,980 have a letter three or more times. The remaining 10,799 words use seven different letters. At five letters the repeat rate is much lower, so "does this word double a letter" is a strong question to ask at seven letters and a weak one at five.

Why does the list only show some of the words?

Because the page keeps only a window of rows in the browser at a time, so it stays fast with 32,909 entries. The line above the list always tells you the truth about the whole filtered set โ€” it reads "Showing the first 250 of 32,909 seven-letter words" โ€” and the "Show more" button loads the next block. Older rows drop off the top as you go. The "Copy all matches" button still copies every word that matches your filters, and "Copy visible" copies only the rows currently on screen.

Are these official Spelling Bee answers?

No. This is the site's dictionary of 32,909 seven-letter words, so most entries are valid candidates rather than accepted answers. The curated answer list the site's own Spelling Bee game uses holds 1,128 words of four letters or more, and only ten of them are seven letters long. The mechanical rules โ€” seven letters, a compulsory centre letter, a four-letter minimum โ€” are on the Spelling Bee word list guide, and the pangram rules are on the pangram guide.

What is the average Scrabble score for a 7-letter word?

11.82 points, using standard English letter values. Words built from seven different letters average 12.35 and words with a repeated letter average 11.56. The expensive letters pull hard: words containing a Z average 20.65, a Q 18.49, a J 17.59 and an X 17.10. The top of the list is PIZZAZZ, PAZZAZZ and BEZZAZZ at 45 points each, and 802 words score 20 or more.

How many 7-letter words start with S?

3,843, which is 11.68% of the list. C follows with 2,771, P with 2,524 and B with 2,290. The rare end of the table is more striking: only 26 seven-letter words start with X, 167 start with Y, 174 with Q and 199 with Z. The letter chips above the word list show all 26 counts and recalculate them whenever you change a filter.
