How to Play Minesweeper — Complete Guide

Minesweeper is a classic logic puzzle game that has challenged players for over 40 years. Originally created in 1989 and later bundled with Microsoft Windows, it remains one of the most popular free online games, with over 1.7 million monthly visitors to the top Minesweeper site alone. Our free Minesweeper game lets you play the classic version right in your browser — no download, no login, completely unblocked.

Minesweeper Rules

  • Left-click a cell to reveal it. If it's a mine, you lose. If it's safe, it shows a number.
  • Numbers indicate how many mines touch that cell (including diagonals). A "3" means 3 mines are adjacent.
  • Right-click a cell to flag it as a suspected mine. Right-click again to remove the flag.
  • Clear all non-mine cells to win the game. You don't need to flag every mine — just reveal all safe cells.
  • Chord clicking: When a number has exactly that many flagged neighbors, double-click it to reveal all other adjacent cells at once.
  • First click is always safe. The cell you click first — plus its neighbors — will never contain a mine, in Daily and Practice modes alike.

Minesweeper Strategy — How to Win

  1. Start in a corner. Clicking a corner cell gives you the most information with the fewest adjacent cells to worry about. It often reveals a large area.
  2. Learn the 1-2-1 pattern. If you see 1-2-1 in a row, the cells below the 2 are always mines, and the cells below the outer 1s are always safe. This is the most powerful pattern in Minesweeper.
  3. Use the 1-1 pattern. When two 1s are adjacent and share a common unflagged cell, the cell beyond the second 1 is always safe.
  4. Flag known mines. Once you deduce a mine's location, flag it immediately. This prevents accidental clicks and helps with chord clicking.
  5. Count remaining mines. The mine counter tells you how many mines are left. If the counter matches the number of flagged cells, all remaining unflagged cells are safe.
  6. Work systematically. Don't click randomly. Scan the board row by row, looking for cells where the number matches the count of hidden neighbors — those hidden cells are all mines.
  7. Use probability when stuck. If you can't deduce a mine's location, calculate which cell has the lowest probability of being a mine. Beginner boards are usually solvable without guessing.

Minesweeper Difficulty Levels

  • Beginner: 9×9 grid with 10 mines (12.3% density) — perfect for learning the rules and basic patterns.
  • Intermediate: 16×16 grid with 40 mines (15.6% density) — requires more advanced strategies and pattern recognition.
  • Expert: 16×30 grid with 99 mines (20.6% density) — the ultimate challenge. Even experts need to guess sometimes.

Common Minesweeper Mistakes

  • Clicking randomly. Minesweeper is a logic game, not a guessing game. Every move should be based on information from revealed numbers.
  • Not using flags. Flagging known mines prevents accidental clicks and enables chord clicking.
  • Ignoring the mine counter. The counter tells you how many mines remain — use it to verify your flags and find safe cells.
  • Playing too fast. Rushing leads to mistakes. Take your time to analyze each number carefully.
