Play the 2048 Game
2048 is an addictive sliding tile puzzle game where your objective is to combine matching numbers to reach the legendary 2048 tile. It requires forward planning and strict positional control.
How to Play
Use your keyboard arrow keys (or swipe on a mobile screen) to move all tiles on the 4x4 grid in a single direction. When two tiles with the same number collide during a move, they merge into one tile with double the value (e.g., two 4s become an 8). A new 2 or 4 tile spawns randomly after every move.
How the Game Engine Works
Our localized 2048 engine processes board states using instantaneous HTML5 DOM transitions and tracks your persistent high score via local storage. Because there are no backend server calls, you can safely play offline or on restricted networks.
Essential 2048 Tips
- The Corner Strategy: Pick a specific corner (usually bottom-right or bottom-left) and keep your highest value tile locked there. Never swipe in the opposite direction, or your highest tile will be dislodged.
- Build a Snake: Organize your tiles in descending order leading into your corner tile. This allows you to trigger massive chain reactions when a new merge happens.
- Slow Down: It's tempting to rapidly tap the arrow keys, but a single wrong move that fills the board with 2s can permanently ruin your grid.

How to Play 2048 — Complete Guide
2048 is the viral sliding tile puzzle game that took the internet by storm, with over 1.9 million monthly searches worldwide. Created by Gabriele Cirulli in 2014 as a weekend project, it became one of the most addictive free online games ever made. Our free 2048 game lets you play the original version right in your browser — no download, no login, completely unblocked, with undo support and best-score tracking.
2048 Rules — How the Game Works
- Slide to move: Use arrow keys on desktop (or swipe on mobile) to slide ALL tiles in one direction — up, down, left, or right.
- Merge matching tiles: When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one tile with double the value. Two 4s become an 8. Two 128s become a 256.
- New tiles spawn: After every move, a new tile (90% chance of a 2, 10% chance of a 4) spawns in a random empty cell.
- Reach 2048 to win: Merge tiles until you create a 2048 tile. Skilled players can continue to 4096, 8192, and beyond.
- Game over: You lose when the 4×4 board is completely full and no valid merges remain.
How to Win 2048 — The Corner Strategy
The single most important 2048 strategy is the corner strategy. Pick one corner of the board (bottom-right works well for right-handed players, bottom-left for left-handed) and keep your highest-value tile locked there for the entire game. If your big tile sits in the bottom-left corner, you only ever swipe Left, Right, and Down — never Up. For the full playbook with tile-order diagrams, see our How to Win 2048 guide.
- Build a snake pattern. Arrange tiles in descending order snaking away from your corner: 2048, 1024, 512, 256 along one edge, with smaller tiles filling inward.
- Never move your biggest tile. Every swipe should keep the max tile pinned. If it shifts out of the corner, your next 2–3 moves must restore it before continuing.
- Avoid the opposite row. Don't swipe toward the row opposite your corner except to break 4-tile deadlocks — stray tiles there split your columns and kill your merge chains.
- Don't chase merges. Random merging scatters tiles. Every move should either feed your snake pattern or preserve empty space.
- Keep 2–3 empty cells. Running out of space is how games die. Merge aggressively when the board fills past 14 tiles.
- Break ties downward. When two directions look equal, prefer the move that keeps large tiles closer to your corner.
Common 2048 Mistakes
- Swiping randomly. Every move should follow the corner strategy. Random swipes scatter tiles and end games early.
- Chasing small merges. Merging two 2s in the wrong corner breaks your snake. Only merge when it feeds the pattern.
- Ignoring the spawn. Every move spawns a new tile — plan for it. Leave buffer space where spawns won't block merges.
- Forgetting undo. Our game has unlimited undo. Use it when a move breaks your corner position.
