Boggle 7-Letter Words
Seven letters is where a Boggle round is won. A seven-letter word scores 5 points against the 1 point you get for a three- or four-letter find, and it is the first length where a single word changes the shape of a score. This page lists all 32,909 of them, sorted, filtered and copyable β and explains what it actually takes to find one.
Every seven-letter word, filterable
Click a letter to keep only the words that start with it, type any letters the board must contain, rule out the letters that are already used up, and copy what is left. Every count below is computed live from the 32,909-word list this site ships, so the numbers follow the filters instead of sitting still in a table.

Filter by the first letter
Each chip shows how many of the 32,909 seven-letter words start with that letter. Click one to keep only those words; click it again to clear it. The chips are rebuilt every time the filters change, so they always describe the current set.
Copy all copies every word currently matching the filters, not just the ones on screen. Type a letter twice in the include box to require two copies of it. The list loads 60 words at a time and keeps the page light, so the oldest rows drop off the top as you go β Copy all still grabs the full set.
What a seven-letter word is worth
Start with the scoring, because it determines everything else. On this site's Boggle, a word of three or four letters scores 1 point. Five letters scores 2. Six letters scores 3. Seven letters scores 5. Eight letters or more scores 11.
That ladder is deliberately non-linear. Points are not proportional to length; they are set so that one long find beats a pile of short ones. A seven-letter word is worth the same as five three-letter words, but it costs you one submission and one unbroken train of thought instead of five submissions and five interruptions to your thinking. That is the whole argument for hunting long words: the game pays you to think in one continuous chain rather than in fragments.
Look at the step from six to seven and then from seven to eight. Six letters is 3 points. Seven is 5. Eight is 11. The seven-to-eight step more than doubles the value of a word for a single extra letter, which is why the top of the length distribution is where the biggest individual gains live. Seven letters sits just below that cliff, and it is the last length that a 4Γ4 board can produce in reasonable numbers.
The 32,909 words on this page are therefore worth 164,545 points in total if you somehow found every one of them on a single board. You never will. In practice a seven-letter word is a scarce resource, and the rest of this page is about how scarce, and where it comes from.
A seven-letter word needs seven separate dice
The rule that makes seven letters hard is mechanical rather than linguistic: no die may be used twice in the same word. A seven-letter word therefore needs seven distinct dice, all of them touching the next one in a chain β horizontally, vertically or diagonally, but never skipping a cell and never stepping on the same cube twice.
On a 4Γ4 board that means seven of your sixteen dice. On a 5Γ5 board it means seven of your twenty-five. Those two numbers look similar, and they hide a large difference, because what matters is not how many dice you have but how many of them are next to each other in the right order.
You can count the possible chains exactly. On a 4Γ4 grid there are 42 pairs of touching dice. The number of non-repeating chains of exactly three dice is 408, of four dice 1,764, of five dice 6,712, of six dice 22,672, of seven dice 68,272, and of eight dice 183,472. On a 5Γ5 grid the same counts are 72 adjacent pairs, 768 chains of three, 3,768 of four, 17,280 of five, 74,072 of six, 296,360 of seven, and 1,110,000 of eight.
Read the seven-dice row. A 4Γ4 board has 68,272 possible seven-dice paths; a 5Γ5 board has 296,360, more than four times as many. Each path can spell at most one seven-letter string, so 68,272 is a hard ceiling on how many distinct seven-letter words a 4Γ4 board can possibly contain, and 296,360 is the same ceiling for a 5Γ5. Most of those paths spell nonsense, and many different paths spell the same word. The ceiling is enormously higher than the real number.
It also explains why the perimeter matters. A corner die has three neighbours, an edge die has five, and an interior die has eight. A seven-dice chain that hugs the edge of the board is much rarer than one that wanders through the middle, which is why a long word laid out along the rim of the grid is both harder to find by eye and less likely to be duplicated by another player in a multiplayer game.
How common seven-letter words actually are
Because the arithmetic above is only a ceiling, the honest way to answer the question is to measure it. We rolled 2,000 random boards for each board size using this site's own dice sets β the same 16 dice for 4Γ4 and the same 25 for 5Γ5 that the game uses β and solved every one of them with this site's own 267,751-word dictionary, using the same adjacency rules as the game. Nothing here is a guess about how people play. It is a measurement of what the boards physically contain.
On 4Γ4 boards, the average board contained 2.12 seven-letter words. The median was 1. The busiest board in the sample contained 29. And 706 of the 2,000 boards β 35.3% β contained no seven-letter word at all.
On 5Γ5 boards the numbers are 2.89 on average, a median of 1, and a maximum of 34 in the same sample. 656 of the 2,000 boards β 32.8% β held no seven-letter word.
The interesting result is how little the bigger board helps. Going from 4Γ4 to 5Γ5 increases the average number of seven-letter words on a board by about 36%, and it reduces the odds of a board with none from 35.3% to 32.8%. That is a real improvement, but it is nothing like the improvement you get for shorter words. The reason is the dice. This site's 5Γ5 set covers only 19 of the 26 letters β there is no B, J, K, Q, V, X or Z face anywhere in it β while the 4Γ4 set covers all 26. The bigger board gives you more cells to work with and a narrower alphabet to work with them, and the two effects largely cancel out.
Here is the rest of the measurement. Across the 2,000 random 4Γ4 boards, 2,120 distinct seven-letter words turned up β 6.44% of the 32,909 on this page. Across the 2,000 random 5Γ5 boards, 1,552 distinct seven-letter words turned up, or 4.72%. The 4Γ4 figure is the higher one because 4Γ4 boards reuse the same small set of letter combinations more often, so the words that do appear keep turning up.
Read that last pair of numbers as the honest headline for this page. The list of 32,909 seven-letter words is not a menu of 32,909 things you might find. It is a catalogue of the long tail, and a typical board touches only a tiny corner of it. That is not a reason to skip seven-letter words. It is a reason to know, before the clock starts, that finding two of them is a good round and finding four is a very good one.
The lucky vowel run
Every word of seven letters needs at least one vowel, and this dictionary's seven-letter words need a lot of them. Split the 32,909 by vowel count and the shape is remarkably tight.
| Vowels in the word | Words | Share | What it means on a board |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 4 | 0.01% | GLYCYLS, NYMPHLY, RHYTHMS, TSKTSKS β effectively unreachable |
| 1 | 686 | 2.08% | One vowel to anchor the whole chain |
| 2 | 14,266 | 43.35% | The classic shape: two vowel runs separated by consonants |
| 3 | 15,324 | 46.56% | The single most common shape in the list |
| 4 | 2,569 | 7.81% | Vowel-heavy, and therefore surprisingly hard to arrange |
| 5 | 59 | 0.18% | Almost requires a vowel-rich board |
| 6 | 1 | 0.003% | The only word in the list with six vowels |
Nearly 90% of seven-letter words have two or three vowels, and 16.07% of them start with a vowel outright. A seven-letter word is therefore two consonant runs with vowels threaded between them, or one long vowel-rich run. Either way, the board needs to give you a usable vowel skeleton before it gives you anything else.
That is why experienced Boggle players do not scan for the letters of a long word. They scan for the vowel skeleton. Look for a pair of vowels that touch β an E next to an I, an O next to an A β and then ask whether consonants hang off both ends of that pair. A seven-letter word with three vowels has four consonants, and four consonants plus a three-vowel core is the shape you are looking for when you sweep a board.
The four vowel-free words deserve a mention because they are funny and instructive. GLYCYLS, NYMPHLY, RHYTHMS and TSKTSKS are the only seven-letter words in the list with no vowel at all, and every one of them is built on a Y doing the work of a vowel. RHYTHMS is a plausible board find if the letters happen to line up; the other three are effectively decorative. This is a good example of where a full dictionary stops being a realistic menu of board finds.
Which letters seven-letter words are built from
There are 230,363 letters in the 32,909 seven-letter words, and their distribution is worth knowing because it tells you which letter a board is most likely to be able to supply. Counted across every letter position, the ranking runs E, S, A, I, R, N, O, T, L, D, U, C, G, P, M, H, B, Y, K, F, W, V, Z, X, J, Q.
| Letter | Appearances | Letter | Appearances | Letter | Appearances |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| E | 27,218 | I | 17,857 | C | 8,057 |
| S | 21,721 | R | 16,584 | G | 7,490 |
| A | 18,464 | N | 13,906 | P | 6,698 |
| I | 17,857 | O | 13,553 | M | 6,651 |
| R | 16,584 | T | 12,874 | H | 5,630 |
| N | 13,906 | L | 12,345 | B | 5,209 |
| O | 13,553 | D | 9,472 | Y | 3,698 |
| T | 12,874 | U | 8,675 | K | 3,387 |
| L | 12,345 | F | 3,382 | ||
| D | 9,472 | W | 2,686 | ||
| U | 8,675 | V | 1,978 | ||
| Z | 1,118 | ||||
| X | 668 | ||||
| J | 644 | ||||
| Q | 398 |
E alone accounts for 27,218 of the 230,363 letters β 11.82% of every letter in the entire list. S is next with 21,721, then A with 18,464 and I with 17,857. At the other end, Q appears 398 times across the whole list, J 644 times and X 668 times.
That ranking is the practical argument for scanning a board for E first. A 4Γ4 board has 16 dice and the letter E makes up roughly an eighth of the letters in this list, so E is the letter most likely to be present and the letter most likely to be useful as a chain link. A board with a fat E in the middle is a board that supports long words.
One caveat is worth stating plainly: letter frequency in a dictionary is not the same as letter frequency on a board. The dice are not a flat draw from the alphabet. The 4Γ4 set this game uses carries 96 letter faces and includes every letter in the alphabet, with 11 of those faces being E and J, K, Q, X and Z appearing on exactly one face each. The 5Γ5 set carries 166 faces but only 19 different letters. A board and a dictionary therefore agree about which letters are common, but not by the same margin.
Doubles, triples and the shapes that pay
Seven letters is long enough that a repeat is likely. In the 32,909 words, 22,110 β 67.19% β contain at least one letter that appears more than once. 1,980 words, or 6.02%, carry a letter three or more times. The remaining 10,799 words, 32.81%, are built entirely from seven different letters. A further 20,130 words have exactly one letter appearing twice and every other letter appearing once.
That 32.81% figure has a direct consequence on the board. A seven-letter word with seven distinct letters needs seven different dice showing seven different letters, and a 4Γ4 board with a repeated E cannot produce one. A word with one double needs six distinct letters and a spare copy of one of them, which is a much easier requirement, and it is why a double on a board is good news rather than bad.
The distribution of distinct letters inside the word shows the same thing from the other side. Only 42 of the 32,909 words are built from just three different letters, 875 from four, 6,087 from five, 15,106 from six, and 10,799 from seven. Almost 80% of the list needs at least six different letters, which is another way of saying that most seven-letter words need a board with a wide spread of different letters rather than one rich in a single letter.
The endings are where the doubling hides. Of the 32,909 words, 3,190 end in ES, 2,853 end in ED, 2,382 end in ER and 2,116 end in ING. Those four endings alone account for 10,541 words. Once you have a six-letter word in hand, an adjacent S, D, R or G is the cheapest way to upgrade it into a seven-letter one.
Only 36 words end in TION, which is worth knowing because TION is the ending people hunt for. A -TION word needs a T, an I, an O, an N and a root, and in this list there are only 36 seven-letter candidates, most of them requiring an exact run of letters. It is a fantasy ending. -ING, by contrast, has 2,116 candidates and is worth checking reflexively.
Where seven-letter words start
The 26 first-letter counts in the chip row above are the complete distribution, and they are lopsided in a way that matters. S opens 3,843 seven-letter words. C opens 2,771, P opens 2,524, B opens 2,290 and T opens 1,937. At the other end of the alphabet, Z opens 199, Q opens 174, Y opens 167 and X opens only 26.
Twenty-six X-starting words out of 32,909 is worth pausing on. They are the rarest opening in English at this length, and the reason is mechanical: a seven-letter word starting with X needs a second X somewhere in it, and this list contains only 665 words with an X in them at all. If you spot an X on a board, it is almost always a dead letter, and if you spot an X next to an X it is very nearly a gift.
Looking at the first two letters together sharpens the picture. The most common openings are RE with 901 words, CO with 759, CA with 621, UN with 562, MA with 525, ST with 507, DE with 499, CH with 469, PA with 466 and BE with 455. Every one of those is a consonant-plus-vowel opening, which is exactly the shape that a board can deliver. When you look for a seven-letter word, you are usually looking for a consonant, then a vowel, then a consonant run, then another vowel.
Where seven-letter words end
The endings are more concentrated than the openings, and one ending dominates everything else. 11,036 of the 32,909 words β 33.53% β end in S. That is more than three times the size of the next ending. E ends 3,501 words, D ends 3,497, R ends 2,764, G ends 2,263, T ends 1,781 and Y ends 1,752. Q ends just 2 words and V ends exactly 1.
The concentration in S is the single most actionable fact on this page. A third of all seven-letter words end in S, and S is the second commonest letter in the list overall. If you have a six-letter word and there is an unused S touching its last letter, extending it is a free upgrade from 3 points to 5. This is why serious players check the neighbourhood of a found word before they move on.
The handful of words ending in Q and V are curiosities rather than strategy. The single seven-letter word in this list that ends in V is worth mentioning only to make the point that the tail of English contains shapes the board will almost never produce. The tool at the top of this page is filterable by the letters you can see, so once you know a board has no V, you can rule out the entire V-ending branch in one click.
The rare letters and the Q and U convention
Counting the words rather than the letter positions gives a slightly different picture of the rare letters. 1,909 seven-letter words contain a V, 3,231 contain a K, 2,613 contain a W, 948 contain a Z, 665 contain an X, 629 contain a J, and 398 contain a Q β 1.21% of the entire list.
This is the point at which the site's own rules matter, and it is worth being precise about them rather than assuming the tabletop version. Classic Boggle prints "Qu" on a single die face, so that one cube supplies both letters at once. This site's dice do not merge them. The 4Γ4 set contains a die with the faces H, I, M, N, Q and U, which means a Q face is a plain Q and a U face is a plain U. They are separate tiles, and a word like QUIZZED needs a Q die with a U die adjacent to it, plus the rest of the chain.
The practical effect is small, because only 398 words in the list contain a Q β 1.21% of it β and only 174 of those 398 start with a Q at all. The rule change is still the reason a few of those are unreachable on a given board, but it is not the difference between finding a Q word and not finding one. QUIZZED is in this list and scores 35 Scrabble points, so it is a real find when the board allows it β it just needs two tiles where a tabletop tray would need one.
There is a second, subtler effect. Because Q and U are separate, a board can contain a Q and no adjacent U, in which case every QU word in the list is dead for that board β and the tool can rule them all out at once. Type Q into the exclude box and you will see immediately how few seven-letter words survive a board with no Q in it.
Scrabble value of the seven-letter words
Every word on this page is legal Scrabble material as well, though the reasons to want it are different. A Boggle round rewards length; a Scrabble rack rewards letter values. The average Scrabble score across all 32,909 seven-letter words is 11.82 points, which is high by the standards of the list β seven letters is simply a lot of tiles to play.
The top of the value table is dominated by the same pattern it always is: rare letters in multiples. PIZZAZZ, PAZZAZZ and BEZZAZZ are worth 45 points each, ZYZZYVA is worth 43, and PIZAZZY is worth 39. Then come PZAZZES at 36 and a cluster at 35: JAZZILY, QUIZZED, ZIZZING and ZIZZLED. A JACUZZI or a JAZZBOS is 34.
Those words are also among the hardest things on a board. ZYZZYVA needs two Zs, two Ys, a V and an A in a specific order. The Boggle solver will find it if the dice allow, and it is worth 11 Boggle points for 8 letters, which is the best possible outcome β but the frequency table is a reminder that the top of the Scrabble value table and the top of the realistic Boggle finds are almost entirely different lists.
For a Scrabble use, the practical value of this page is a filtered catalogue: given a rack that holds a J and needs a seven-letter play, filter for J and read the list. The Scrabble solver handles rack and square values when you want the placement as well as the word.
Reading real seven-letter words
It helps to look at actual entries, because the statistics describe a shape and the words show what the shape looks like when you are trying to trace it on a grid.
JOURNEY, JACKETS, PICKLES and WATCHED are the everyday seven-letter words. Most of them carry two vowels and five consonants, which is the single most common shape in the list, and JOURNEY carries three. THUNDER, WESTERN, SHADOWS and DEVELOP are the same kind of shape, and each can be laid out on a grid in a way that uses the board's interior. CONDEMN, BLENDER and CROWDED show what a double does inside a seven-letter word. HAIRCUT is a three-vowel word with a hard consonant frame around them, which is the 46.56% shape. ADJUSTS ends in S like a third of the list, and AVERAGE, OATMEAL and AVOCADO show the vowel-rich variety that 7.81% of the list has.
And then there is the tail. ZYZZYVA, AARRGHH and QUIZZED are the kind of word that shows up in a dictionary because a lexicon is a record of language rather than a menu of playable things. RHYTHMS is the interesting one, because it is a real English word that manages to do it with no conventional vowel at all β and it is in the list, so a board that lines the letters up can produce it. VACCINE, VILLAGE, GRANDMA, HOLIDAY, JEWELRY, LIBRARY, MONITOR, PENGUIN, PROBLEM, PUMPKIN, WEATHER, WEEKEND and WHISPER are the same category: perfectly findable, worth 5 points, and exactly the sort of word a player is pleased to have spotted.
Use the tool to look at the boundary. Filter to the letter X and read the 26 results. Filter to a required Z. Those short lists are the fastest way to understand how much of this page a single board can ever touch.
How to hunt for a seven-letter word on a board
Some practical technique, ordered by what actually works.
- Find the vowel skeleton first. Look for two vowels that touch, then consonants hanging off both ends. Almost every seven-letter word in the list has two or three vowels, so this is where the word is hiding.
- Work from roots, not from letter sequences. You will not spot P-A-I-N-T-E-D on a board. You will spot a PAINT, and then check whether an E and a D are reachable in order from the end of it.
- Always check for a trailing S. A third of the list ends in S, and an S next to the end of a found word converts a six-letter 3-pointer into a seven-letter 5-pointer for one tap.
- Check the perimeter. Perimeter chains are rarer, so they survive your first pass of attention longer. A seven-letter word along the rim is often still there when you come back for seconds.
- Use the solver when the board goes quiet. The Boggle solver takes the 16 or 25 letters and lists every valid word with its path. It uses the same dictionary and the same adjacency rules, so every seven-letter word it returns is on this page β and it also returns the eight-letter words worth 11 points that this page does not list.
- Re-read the board after every find. A word you submit covers dice, and the dice behind it were part of a longer word you had not seen yet.
What this list is, and what it is not
Two limits, stated plainly.
First, this is an acceptance list, not a list of things you will find. The dictionary behind it holds 267,751 words in total, and 32,909 of them happen to be seven letters long. That is 12.29% of the dictionary, and it includes every inflected form, every rare compound and every technical term in the set. A seven-letter word like ZYZZYVA is in the list because it is in the dictionary, not because anyone is going to spell it on a Boggle board.
Second, the measurement above makes the second limit concrete. Across 2,000 random 5Γ5 boards, the boards between them surfaced 1,552 distinct seven-letter words. That is 4.72% of this list, and it is the honest answer to the question "how much of this page is realistic". The page is still worth having, because the 1,552 words that a board can produce are exactly the ones you will lose points on when you miss them, and because the filter turns 32,909 into a short list the moment you know two or three of the letters.
What the list is good for is narrowing. Know that the board has an E, a S, a T and a R, and you can filter for words containing all four, add a first letter, and read what is left. The word finder does the same job across the full dictionary if you need to search beyond one length, and the unscramble tool is the fastest way to work out what a rack of visible letters can be rearranged into.
The words on this page are also useful outside Boggle. The spelling bee word list covers the same dictionary for a different game, the word search maker will hide any selection of these words in a grid, and the five-letter word hub covers the length most people actually need first.
For the shorter lengths, the Boggle words by length hub explains the scoring, the three-minute clock, the difference between a 4Γ4 and a 5Γ5 board, and links to every list from three letters up.
Where to go next
If you want the other lengths, they are all here: the three-letter words that pay the rent, the four-letter words where most of the raw count hides, the five-letter words that are where a score starts to jump, the six-letter words that mostly live on a 5Γ5 board, and the seven-letter list on this page.
To actually play, the Boggle game runs a 4Γ4 or 5Γ5 board with a three-minute clock and reveals every word you missed when the timer runs out. The Boggle solver solves a board for you and shows the path for every word it finds, which is the fastest way to learn where the long words were hiding. If you are playing a static on-screen grid rather than a shaken tray, the Boggle on a screen grid guide covers how the reading strategy changes when the board does not move.
And if you want the theory behind the scoring rather than the words, the Boggle words hub works through how a board turns into points and why the three-minute clock changes what you should be looking for.
Boggle 7-Letter Words β FAQ
How many seven-letter words are there in Boggle?
There are 32,909 seven-letter words in this site's Boggle dictionary, and every one of them is worth 5 points on the game's scoring table. The list on this page contains all of them, and you can filter it by the first letter, by letters the board must contain, and by letters the board does not have.
How hard is it to find a seven-letter word on a 4Γ4 board?
Harder than most people expect. We solved 2,000 random boards for each size using this site's own dice sets and its own 267,751-word dictionary. The average 4Γ4 board contained 2.12 seven-letter words and the median was 1, while 706 of the 2,000 boards β 35.3% β contained no seven-letter word at all. A seven-letter word also needs seven separate dice, because no die can be used twice in the same word.
Is a 5Γ5 board much better for long words?
Only slightly. The same 2,000-board measurement found an average of 2.89 seven-letter words on a 5Γ5 board against 2.12 on a 4Γ4, and 656 of the 2,000 5Γ5 boards β 32.8% β contained no seven-letter word. A 5Γ5 grid has 296,360 possible chains of seven dice against 68,272 on a 4Γ4, but it also spreads the same few vowels across a larger area, so the vowel run a long word needs is just as likely to be broken up.
How do you spell a Q word in this version of Boggle?
Q and U are separate tiles here, the same way they are on a physical tray that does not merge them onto one face. A Q tile is a plain Q, so a word such as QUIZZED needs a Q die with a separate U die next to it, plus the rest of the chain. Only 398 of the 32,909 seven-letter words contain a Q, so the difference is small in practice, but it does change which words are findable on a given board.
What is the most common letter in seven-letter words?
E. Across the 230,363 letters in the 32,909 words, E appears 27,218 times, which is 11.82% of every letter in the list. S is next with 21,721, then A with 18,464 and I with 17,857. At the other end, Q appears 398 times, J 644 and X 668, which is why those letters are so often dead on a board.
How many seven-letter words end in S?
11,036 of the 32,909, which is 33.53% of the list β more than three times the size of any other ending. E ends 3,501 words, D ends 3,497 and R ends 2,764. Because S is also the second commonest letter overall, an unused S sitting next to the end of a six-letter word is the cheapest upgrade in the game, turning 3 points into 5.
Do most seven-letter words repeat a letter?
Yes. 22,110 of the 32,909 words β 67.19% β contain at least one letter more than once, and 1,980 of them carry a letter three or more times. The other 10,799 words, 32.81%, are built from seven completely different letters, which means they need seven distinct dice showing seven distinct letters.
Is this list of words people actually play in Boggle?
It is a dictionary, not a scoreboard. These 32,909 words are the seven-letter slice of this site's 267,751-word dictionary, so they include inflections, rare compounds and technical terms such as ZYZZYVA alongside everyday words like KITCHEN and TEACHER. Across 2,000 random 5Γ5 boards, 1,552 distinct seven-letter words turned up β 4.72% of this list. Use the filters to narrow it to the letters your board actually has.
