What Is Spellie?
Spellie is a spelling word game played on a 7-letter hive: six outer letters plus one required center letter. The goal is to build as many words of 4 or more letters as you can, using only the hive letters, with every word containing the center letter. Letters may repeat — so if the hive has an E, you can use E as many times as a word needs. Words that use all 7 letters are pangrams, worth big bonus points and the key to climbing the ranks from Beginner to Genius.
The format will feel familiar if you play the NYT Spelling Bee — the rules are identical — and this solver works for any Bee-style puzzle. Enter the letters, get every answer, and see exactly what each rank requires.
How to Use the Spellie Solver
- Enter the 7 letters. Type the hive letters in any order — duplicates are removed automatically. The solver requires exactly 7 unique letters.
- Enter the center letter. This is the required letter every answer must contain. It must be one of your 7 letters.
- Click Solve. Pangrams appear first in highlighted tiles, followed by all valid words grouped by length with point values. The scoreboard shows total words, pangram count, maximum score, and a rank ladder calibrated to your exact puzzle.
Scoring & Ranks: How Genius Works
Classic Bee scoring is simple: 4-letter words earn 1 point, words of 5+ letters earn 1 point per letter, and each pangram adds a 7-point bonus on top. Your rank is your score as a percentage of the puzzle's maximum:
- Beginner — 0% (just showing up)
- Good Start — 2% · Moving Up — 5%
- Good — 8% · Solid — 15% · Nice — 25%
- Great — 40% · Amazing — 50%
- Genius — 70% (the crown — no need for 100%)
- Queen Bee — 100% (every word found)
The practical takeaway: one pangram is often worth more than a dozen short words. A single 7-letter pangram scores 7 + 7 = 14 points — the same as fourteen 4-letter words. Always hunt pangrams first.
Worked Example: AEINRST with Center A
This hive is a pangram goldmine. The solver finds the 7-letter pangrams STAINER, STEARIN, STRIATE, and ARTIEST — each worth 7 + 7 = 14 points — plus a deep bench of shorter answers like TRAINER, RETAINS, TRAIN, TRAINS, STAIN, STAIR, SATIN, STERN, ANISE, RAISE, ARISE, TEARS, RATES, STARE, TASTE, and 4-letter staples like RAIN, RAINS, NEAT, SEAT, and EARN. Try it with the example button above and watch the rank ladder calibrate.
Spellie Strategy: From Good to Genius Without Hints
- Chase pangrams first. Look for common 7-letter frames: -ING endings, RE- and UN- prefixes, and -TION/-SION cores. If the hive has ING plus four other letters, a pangram is almost guaranteed.
- Pair the center letter with each outer letter. Systematically try center + each outer letter as a word start (TRA-, STA-, STR-) and as an ending (-AIN, -EARN, -IEST). Boring, methodical — and it finds words inspiration misses.
- Mine the 4-letter words. They are only 1 point each, but they stack fast and push you through the early ranks. Plurals count, so RAIN gives RAINS and TRAIN gives TRAINS — always test the S ending.
- Reuse high-frequency endings. -ER, -EST, -IER, -IEST, -NESS, and -LESS endings turn one stem into three or four answers. Found LATE? Try LATER, LATEST, and LATELY if Y is in the hive.
- Watch for the center-letter trap. Players fixate on words starting with the center letter. Many answers bury it mid-word (ENTRAILS hides its A third) — scan the solver's list for patterns you overlooked.
- Study the list, then replay. After solving, cover the answers and re-derive five words from memory. That is how hive patterns become instinct.
