How Similarity Ranking Works
Contexto uses AI word embeddings โ every word is a point in a high-dimensional meaning-space, and "similarity" is the distance between points. After each guess you get a rank number: rank #1 is the secret word itself, rank 50 means only 49 words in the language are semantically closer, rank 5000 means you are in the wrong neighborhood entirely. Two critical facts:
- Spelling does not matter. "KITCHEN" and "KITTEN" look alike but sit far apart in meaning-space. Think in concepts, not letters.
- Rank is relative, not absolute. Dropping from 8000 โ 3000 is huge progress even though both numbers look bad. Always compare against your best rank so far, not against 1.
Today's Hint: Start Wide, Then Ladder
Open with 4โ6 broad "anchor" nouns from different domains: water, person, place, thing, food, music. Whichever anchor ranks best reveals the secret word's semantic continent. Then climb the word ladder: from your best word, guess a slightly more specific neighbor (water โ river โ stream โ creek), keeping every guess that improves your best rank and abandoning branches that rank worse. For a deeper walkthrough, see our how to beat Contexto guide.
Word-Ladder Tactics Tool
Log your guesses and their ranks below. The tool tracks your best rank, classifies each guess as a breakthrough / step / dead-end, and tells you what to do next:
The Four Climbing Tactics
- Anchor (guesses 1โ6): probe distant domains โ nature, people, objects, food, places, abstractions. You are triangulating, not guessing the answer.
- Ladder (guesses 7โ20): from the best anchor, step to near-synonyms and sub-categories. If "water" ranks 400, try "river", "ocean", "rain", "lake" โ the best of these becomes the next rung.
- Fan out at plateaus: when 3+ guesses in a row fail to beat your best rank, you are on a local peak. Jump sideways โ list 5 things associated with your best word (uses, locations, parts) and test those.
- Sprint under rank 100: inside the top 100, switch to tight synonyms and word forms (plurals, verb/noun swaps). The answer is almost always a common word adjacent to your best guess.
Beginner Traps to Avoid
- Chasing spelling. Guessing "BREAD" then "BREAK" then "BEARD" wastes turns โ similarity ignores letter overlap.
- Quitting anchors early. One bad anchor rank means nothing; you need 4โ6 anchors to triangulate. A single rank-9000 guess is data, not failure.
- Ignoring the green zone. Many versions color-code close guesses green โ the moment you see green, stop exploring and ladder exclusively from that word.
- Over-specific opens. Opening with "PHOTOSYNTHESIS" tells you almost nothing. Broad beats clever at the start.

How does Contexto ranking work?
Each guess is ranked by AI-measured meaning similarity to the secret word. Rank #1 is the answer. Lower rank = closer meaning. Track the tactics tool above to watch your rank fall.
What is the best starting word for Contexto?
No single word โ open with 4โ6 broad anchors like water, person, place, food, music across different domains, then ladder from whichever ranks best.
What is today's Contexto answer?
We keep this page spoiler-free. Climb with the ladder strategy and play free at our Contexto game page.
How many guesses does Contexto allow?
Unlimited โ there is no guess cap. Skilled players typically finish in 20โ40 guesses. For full technique, read how to beat Contexto.
Is Contexto related to Semantle?
Yes โ both rank guesses by semantic similarity. See our Semantle hints page for the sibling game's abstract-to-concrete tactics.
