How Semantle Similarity Scoring Works
Semantle embeds every word as a vector (a list of numbers capturing its usage patterns across massive text) and scores your guess with cosine similarity to the secret word โ shown as a score plus a "getting close" bar and a top-1000 flag when your guess lands among the 1,000 nearest words. Key implications:
- Higher is closer โ always relative. A score of 12 vs your baseline of 4 is real progress. Compare every guess against your personal best, not against 100.
- Antonyms can score high. "Hot" and "cold" appear in similar contexts, so opposites often look deceptively close. When a branch feels contradictory, test the opposite pole deliberately.
- The top-1000 flag is the green zone. The moment a guess earns it, stop exploring distant domains โ the answer lives in that word's neighborhood.
Today's Hint: Go Abstract โ Concrete
The winning tactic is a one-way descent down the abstraction ladder. Open with ultra-general words โ thing, world, life, time, people โ and note which scores highest. Then step exactly one level more concrete each round: thing โ object โ tool โ knife โ blade. Each rung should beat the last; when scores stall for 3+ guesses, you have drifted sideways โ return to your best word and descend a different sub-branch (parts, uses, locations, materials).
Guess-Tracker Tactics Tool
Log each guess with its similarity score. The tool tracks your best, labels each entry, and advises your next move:
The Five-Rung Descent (Worked Example)
Say the secret word is in the kitchen domain. A textbook descent looks like:
- Rung 1 โ Abstract: "thing" (score 6.2), "place" (4.1), "food" (11.8 โ) โ best branch: food.
- Rung 2 โ Domain: "meal" (18.4), "cook" (24.9 โ), "taste" (17.2) โ best branch: cooking.
- Rung 3 โ Category: "pot" (31.5), "pan" (33.1 โ), "oven" (29.8) โ best branch: pan-adjacent.
- Rung 4 โ Specifics: "skillet" (58.2 โ, top-1000 flag!) โ stop exploring, sprint synonyms.
- Rung 5 โ Sprint: "frying", "griddle", plurals and verb forms until the bar maxes out.
Stall Recovery: The Sideways Fan
When 3+ consecutive guesses fail to beat your best, do not keep pushing the same branch. From your best word, fan out across five association types: parts (wheel โ tire), uses (knife โ cut), locations (fish โ river), materials (shirt โ cotton), opposites (hot โ cold). One of the five almost always reopens the climb โ and remember, Semantle's sibling Contexto rewards the identical recovery.

First games often run 80+ guesses; regulars finish in 25โ40. The abstract-to-concrete instinct only comes from reps โ build it free:

How does Semantle scoring work?
Each guess gets a cosine-similarity score against the secret word โ higher means closer in meaning. A top-1000 flag means your guess is among the 1,000 nearest words. Track scores with the tool above.
What is the best starting word for Semantle?
Ultra-abstract, high-frequency words like thing, world, life, time. They set a baseline; then descend one concreteness level per round.
What is today's Semantle hint?
We keep this page spoiler-free. The universal hint: descend abstract โ concrete, sprint on the top-1000 flag. Play free at our Semantle game page.
How is Semantle different from Contexto?
Semantle shows a similarity score + top-1000 flag; Contexto shows a rank number. Strategy transfers fully โ see our Contexto answer hints.
Can I practice Semantle with unlimited games?
Yes. Our Semantle practice page offers unlimited free games. No account, no daily cap, no cost.
